Internet Of Things

IOT is a relatively new addition to technology in which “things” can connect to the Internet and transfer data to other “things”. By eliminating the need for someone to give orders and facilitate data transferring, IOT can serve useful in maximizing efficiency.

IOT monitors information about our lifestyle in order to direct other objects and maximize efficiency. Nest thermostats monitor our daily patterns to adjust its controls when necessary. In doing so, they save about 20-30% of electricity compared to the average thermostat.

Not only does the thermostat reduce electricity bills and reduce the amount of energy required to maintain the temperature, but it’s also aesthetic and convenient. It doesn’t require much maintenance and doesn’t need to be a large appliance because of its ability to connect to the internet.

Apps that connect to other appliances also fall under the internet of things. They serve a variety of purposes intended to save energy, reduce water consumption, reduce our carbon footprint, etc. Some connect to sprinkling systems and power them during an optimal time period so as to reduce evaporation and overwatering.

Besides helping save the environment, what are other benefits?

  • reduces need for humans
  • convenient for consumers and producers
  • minimal maintenance

Innovations like these are steps in the right direction to solving climate change. IOT has incredible potential to aid in our efforts in the climate crisis and we should utilize it to its extent.
